Fallout 1

Fallout is the game that started it all

Created in 1997 by Interplay studios Fallout is described as a "Post-nuclear Role-playing Game" but in modern terms it would be considered a CRPG. It is actually considered a spiritual successor to a previous Interplay CRPG "Wasteland" which was released in 1988. It was a pretty big game at the time it came out and won "Role-playing Game of the Year" from Gamespot. They also sold 500,000 copies (Which at the time was a very good amount of copies sold for a CRPG).

On this page I will be detailing the Story, gameplay, characters and other aspects of the game! If you would like to see my review of the game, that will be in my review section!

Well lets get into it!

Gameplay

I feel like the best place to start is the gameplay. Fallout is a 2D isometric RPG meaning the game plays from a top-down angled perspective.

What the Game Looks like
This is what you'll be seeing most of the game

Unlike in other RPG's of the time, Fallout does not have a dedicated battle screen, meaning that all actions take place on the same screen. This does mean that at any point you can draw your weapon and shoot whoever is next to you. You can also do actions that you normally could do out of combat inside of combat. If you want to ignore the Raider aiming their gun at you to search a cabinet for loot, you can definetly do that!

Combat itself is your typical Turn based combat system. The caveat is that the game gives you a pool of "Action points" that you get based on your SPECIAL skills, specifically Agility (We will get into SPECIAL when I talk about Character creation but for now think of SPECIAL as being similar to DNDs Attributes). These Action points can be used to perform actions, meaning you can actually do multiple actions in one turn which IS different from the typical Turn-based battle system from other games at the time.

The actions you perform are largely based on your skills. You have a absolutely MASSIVE list of skills to choose from in Fallout, so many that I am not going to list them out and instead just show you a picture of the Skills.

List of Skills
See what I mean?

This picture is also helpful because it shows the division of what each skill is meant for. The first few skills are combat focused skills, things like Small Guns, Melee, Unarmed. Then you have your active skills which are skills you have to activate using the Action Menu. Finally we have the Passive skills, which by the name you could probably guess that these are skills that are passively activated while you play or do certain things in the game.
